Keynote speech by Keynote by Laura Schmidt | AlpArctica about her research trip with the Polarstern to the Arctic

Now it's getting icy. In this talk she will take us on my four-month expedition, far up north, far from any civilization. Home: The research icebreaker Polarstern and our MOSAiC home floe.

Two months self-quarantine, almost three weeks in a quarantine hotel in Bremerhaven, 4 corona tests, three weeks on a transit ship to Spitsbergen. Three months stay on the Polarstern and last but not least 14 days on the Russian icebreaker Tryoshnikov. More than 30 polar bear visits and a strong team of researchers, logistics and crew.

The goal: to better understand climate change in the complex Arctic system and, with the help of robust climate models, to provide a fact-based foundation for important social decisions on climate protection. Because these decisions have to be made now.

Dive with me into the icy world of the central Arctic during this lecture. The ice drift determines our course. You will learn about my tasks as a polar bear keeper and get an insight into life on board Polarstern. As a special treat, a member of the Polarstern crew talks about his impressions and experiences during the second, fourth and fifth leg of "MOSAiC". Without crew this expedition would not have been possible, so be curious to hear the nautical perspective .
